Residents of Pipeshop community rescued from floodwaters

BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) — Some parts of town were more flooded than others Monday, including the Pipeshop community in Bessemer.

Members of the Bessemer Fire Department and Bessemer Police Department gathered Monday morning to rescue dozens of people who were trapped by flood waters.

As Battalion Chief Micahel Brannon told CBS42, not everyone wanted to leave their homes. Some simply had no choice.

“Some of them didn’t have a choice – either couldn’t get out to get food or get their medications,” Brannon said.

Brannon says many of the people they rescued Monday morning actually had family and friends nearby, so city leaders chose not to open a shelter.
