Flood damage not covered by apartment renter’s insurance

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Many folks who live in apartments will be dealing with another problem besides staying in shelters after a flood. Not only are their belongings ruined by the floodwaters, their renter’s insurance will not cover the damage.

CBS42 checked with several insurance agencies and websites and all of them say flood damage, other than that caused by a burst pipe, is not covered. To get that coverage, you have to buy a separate rider policy.

When it comes to your vehicle, however, if you have comprehensive coverage the damage to your car may be covered. Check with your insurance provider. Comprehensive insurance is separate from liability insurance, which the law requires all Alabama drivers to carry.
