BIRMNGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A man who faces multiple murder charges in California was arrested and jailed in Alabama.
Jose Martinez is awaiting trial for the murder of Jose Ruiz in 2013, but investigators think that murder could be the last in a string of unsolved homicides in multiple states dating as far back as 1978.
CBS42 spoke with Sheriff Mike Boudreaux of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department in Visalia, California.
Boudreaux says Martinez is charged with nine counts of homicide in California.
After Martinez was arrested in Alabama, an investigator from California who had gained Martinez’s confidence traveled to Alabama and conducted three interviews.
From the interviews, the district attorney in California was able to develop a case against him.
Boudreaux did not confirm that Martinez is a contract killer, but he says some evidence his office has obtained leads them to believe he was paid for some of the homicides.
Boudreaux says Alabama has the ability to prosecute Martinez first, and Florida is next in line since he is a suspect in two homicides in the state.
There is no timetable on when Martinez will be sent back to California.
Martinez has admitted to killing more than 30 people.
