The dangers of the water after a flood

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — There are still many threats from all of the flooding the Birmingham area has had in the last couple of days.

The question is how do you protect yourself? The water left standing after the rain stopped can be contaminated from many different sources: gas, oil, and raw sewage are the most dangerous.

Dr. Lisa McCormick, UAB Asst. Professor, says you should stay away from the water. If you do come in contact with it, be sure to wash with soap and clean water.  It’s also important to never play in the water.  Dr. McCormick says, “flood debris can contain hidden hazards like glass, rusty nails, and it may be slippery. So it’s definitely a fall hazard.”

She also says anything left in the water will be filtered out once it reaches the filtration plant, and ultimately your faucet.
