First person flyers meet up in Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. (WIAT) — The popularity of remote controlled helicopters and airplanes has increased in recent years.

The ability to get aerial video has driven the rise in popularity, but some take it a step further.

Kevin Allred and Brandon McMahan are just two of those people who fly their aircrafts via FPV, or first person video. That is when the pilot of the airplane or helicopter uses the view of the camera on the aircraft to see where to go. The pilot uses either a small screen or goggles to receive the transmission from the aircraft.

Allred and McMahan helped organize the first ever Fly-in in the state of Alabama for this weekend.

Enthusiasts from Orange Beach to the Tennessee Valley met in Montevallo to fly, share tips, and check out each other’s aircrafts.

Allred hopes this is only the beginning of an annual event and that it will only grow larger as interest increases.
