PELL CITY, Ala. (WIAT) — Friends and neighbors came together Saturday to remember 5-year-old John Harvard.
The young boy was playing in his front yard with his older brother on April 6, 2014 when a neighbor’s dog attacked him. His older brother tried to pull the dog off of him.
John was rushed to St. Vincent’s hospital in St. Clair County where he died.
Neighbors released balloons for John outside his home Saturday.
Kay Calhoun, who lives next door to the Harvard’s addressed the crowd and asked that they not place blame on the dog owners for the tragedy.
Calhoun has known John since he was born and was one of the last people to see him before he died.
“John was at my house, he played with my grandson. My husband Ray tickled him, he went out the door, they waved at each other and ten minutes later, he was dead,” said Calhoun.
Calhoun says she felt the balloon release was needed to give the children in the neighborhood a chance to say goodbye to Harvard.
A candlelight vigil was also held outside the Harvard home.
