IRONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — After an Irondale eight-year old was found with an airsoft gun at school on Wednesday, we wanted to know what exactly he had in his possession.
“An airsoft gun is a gun that shoots a projectile, a plastic pellet,” Stan Yam, co-owner of Battlegrounds Airsoft in Irondale, said. “The use of it is a recreational activity, very similar to paintball.”
Yam compared airsoft guns to a BB gun, with a major difference being the ammunition. A BB gun has a metallic pellet which can do serious harm to someone. The plastic pellets of airsoft guns usually just leave a welt with the most severe injury being a little blood from broken skin.
He also mentioned airsoft guns should be treated like real firearms.
“You store them just like a real gun, usually until you need them,” Yam said.
When it comes to what age should have airsoft guns, Yam said it is up to parents to make the decision, but to purchase one, you must be eighteen years old.
