BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Mayor William Bell recently visited Japan and spent time with the Dalai Lama. Getting around Japan was easy thanks to the country’s transportation system. Transportation is now a big topic of conversation in the Magic City.
A $30 million intermodal facility is planned for Birmingham. Mayor Bell gave US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx a tour of the future site Wednesday. Spending time in a country that has perfected transportation, the Mayor is excited about the possibilities that come with Birmingham’s facility. Bell said, “I was just in Japan, Japan has a wonderful transportation system, including rail between cities and rails within cities. We need to have the same thing there as well. Without that we won’t be able to compete. We won’t be able to compete on an international level, we won’t be able to compete on a national level, or on a regional level. So it’s important that we have the funding necessary to move our cities forward.”
Secretary Foxx is traveling the country talking about the importance of investing in transportation just as the nation’s highway trust fund is running out.
