CALERA, Ala. (WIAT) — A Calera man is in the Shelby County Jail tonight on attempted murder and domestic violence charges after shooting inside a home.

Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley tells CBS42 that officers were called to the Savannah Point subdivision about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

When they arrived at the home, the suspect, Derek Edward Kiley came out to the front porch and began firing at officers.

Kiley then went back inside the home, but police were able to get him back on to the porch and into custody a short time later.

Lemley says Kiley’s spouse and small children were able to flee the home after he began shooting, but that another juvenile was still inside the home at the time of the incident.

That juvenile was not injured.

Kiley is charged with one count of attempted murder and one count third-degree domestic violence.

He is being held without bond.
