OXFORD (WIAT)- A mother and her child were killed this morning after the car they were riding in was struck by a train in Oxford. The accident happened at a railroad crossing on Coleman Road around 6 a.m. Saturday.
Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown tells 42 News that 35-year-old Temeshica Chatman and 7-year-old Nytavioun Powell were killed when a Norfolk Southern train heading westbound collided with the car Chatman’s daughter was driving. The train slammed into the passenger side of the car, where Chatman is believed to have been sitting at the time of the accident. The daughter, 20-year-old Taneshya Chatman, was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where she remains at this hour.
Brown says the crossing bars and warning lights were operational, and that the car may have been driven around the crossing bars. The accident remains under investigation.
