ANNISTON, Ala. (WIAT) – It all started with a request from someone in the community for the Anniston Police Department to take a picture flexing their muscles to put in a scrapbook for a little girl named Abby.
Captain Allen George had a better idea.
He took to Facebook to post pictures of investigations unit showing they are “Abby strong.” He then challenged other units to join in and it spread like wildfire.
Little league teams, fire departments, even Santa and Big Al have sent in pictures flexing their muscles in support of Abby.
Abby Usher of Eastaboga, was diagnosed with leukemia on April 30th.
Her father says it’s been a difficult time for their family and all of the support is greatly appreciated.
“It’s overwhelming and encouraging to see a community explode into so much support. It’s encouraging and it helps to see that you’ve got a whole community behind you,” said Jeff Usher.
“We’ve been showing Abby the pictures, they’re coming in so fast we can’t keep up. Abby feels like a rock star. She can’t wait to go home to play with her bothers,” he said.
Captain George says the pictures are coming in so fast he’s had to enlist a second person to help post them to the department’s Facebook page.
“To me, it just shows that mankind is innately good and decent. In our line of work, we see a lot of the negative side of mankind and society. The good people far outweigh the bad,” said George.
“It’s probably going to take multiple scrapbooks at this point, but that’s a good problem to have,” he adds.
