Plenty of needs in Bessemer a week after storms

BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) — A week after a tornado touched down in Bessemer, there are still plenty of needs for victims in the area.

The Red Cross shelter has been moved to Macedonia Baptist Church in the Abundant Life Recreation Center. That is located at 1401 26th Street North in Bessemer.

“We are just doing what the Bible said to do,” said William E. Scott, Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church. “It could have been the other way. It could have been any one of us.”

The Red Cross has received donations from many other churches in the area, “too numerous to name” according to Randy Moore with the Red Cross. Despite that help, there are still needs for the twenty to thirty people still using the Red Cross shelter.

The Red Cross needs food items, both snacks and full meals, for those they are still serving. Anyone can drop off snacks at the Bessemer location at 1720 2nd Avenue North. Full meals must be provided by certified food handlers or food kitchens. To organize  a meal for those in need, the Red Cross asks that you call the Bessemer location at (205) 428-4131 to coordinate a time and place.

The Red Cross, as well as Hands On Birmingham, are still looking for volunteers to help in the affected areas and shelters.

Donie Little, who is a member at Macedonia Baptist Church and an insurance agent in town, says he has talked with many people after the storms who are struggling to get in touch with their insurance companies. He says people can’t contact their insurance companies because the phone lines are down.

“They’re saying they don’t have ways of communicating with them right now,” Little said. “Basically they’re telling their loved ones to call and try to assist them to contact their agency.”

Little is organizing a meetup at Macedonia Baptist on Monday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for insurance agents wanting to volunteer as well as those who still need to make claims or get in touch with their insurance companies. They will be in the basement of the church, which is located across from the entrance to the Red Cross shelter.
