TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Police in Tuscaloosa arrested a 14-year-old Hillcrest Middle School student Thursday after he brought a handgun to school.
The student was charged with possession of a weapon on school property.
The Tuscaloosa County School System says the weapon was found in the student’s backpack and was first reported by other students to school administrators.
The student was arrested without disruption and the weapon was secured.
“We are so proud of our students at Hillcrest Middle School who were brave to report their finding,” Superintendent Dr. Liz D. Swinford said in a statement released Thursday afternoon. “It shows character, leadership and makes a clear statement that students are invested in ensuring that their school is safe.”
