TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) – Authorities say a Gadsden man is charged in an alleged sexual assault at a campground outside the Talladega Superspeedway.

Talladega sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Kennedy says campers staying near the track heard noises in the pre-dawn hours before Sunday’s NASCAR race. Thousands of people camp near the track during race weekends.

Kennedy says the campers checked out what was going on and began chasing a man. They captured a man and held him until officers arrived.

Kennedy says 22-year-old Jimenez Miguel Pedro of Gadsden is charged with rape. He’s being held in the Talladega jail with bond set at $250,000.

Records show Pedro doesn’t have a defense attorney yet.

The officer says the alleged victim was taken to a care center at the speedway and then a hospital in Birmingham.
