BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Three law enforcement officers were honored for going above and beyond the call of duty Friday afternoon.
Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale gave awards to deputies David Bassett, Brandon Streit, and Chief Donnie West Junior at the academy’s graduation.
Bassett came up with the Vehicle Refurbishment Project, which helped law enforcement maintain a fleet of patrol cars during a financial crisis.
Streit investigated and caught a suspect wanted for sexual assault and stolen property.
West helped save the life of a recruit who had become unconscious and fell and hit his head during a training session.
He says it was all part of his job.
In all, ten deputies from Jefferson County and one from Pike County were also honored as a part of the academy’s graduation ceremony.
