Outpouring of support follows death of Birmingham officer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Words of encouragement to the Birmingham Police Department and the family of Officer Keary Hollis are pouring out on Facebook.

Police departments all over the state are offering their condolences.

Sgt. Dexter Cunningham says the mood is somber among officers at Birmingham’s West Precinct.

He says the department is trying to cope with the loss as best they can, and anytime an officer is killed it is felt all across their brotherhood.

“It’s difficult because often times it seems as if only other police officers know or understand what you may be going through,” said Cunningham.

Family members have even created a page for people to offer support and share their memories of Hollis who according to his aunt; was a father of three who loved basketball and enjoyed playing and teaching it.

Cunningham says with officers spending so much time with each other on the job they become much like extended family.

“We as police officers, we take an oath to service and protect and when one of our own is killed, especially as tragically as this has occurred it’s painful and it hurts.”

He adds, that in a job where dealing with loss of life on a regularly basis is tough, losing a fellow officer is even more difficult and it will take time to completely heal, but they will make sure justice is serviced in a professional manner while honoring Officer Hollis’ life and continue to do their job.
