Shoal Creek, Ala. (WIAT)-Playing in the Regions Tradition is like a coming of age party for Hall of Fame golfer Colin Montgomerie.
Last year he was two weeks shy of turning 50-years-old when the Champions Tour came to Shoal Creek.
Now he’s here and ready to see what this hype is all about.
“I played 9 holes this morning and I realize what all the fuss is about,” said Montgomerie. “It’s a very good golf course that stood the test of time over the years.”
Even his friends back home know Shoal Creek.
“Everybody at home knows about it,” said Montgomerie. “Even back home in Britain they say where is your next Champions Tour event? I am going to Shoal Creek, Alabama. Oh really? Okay!”
Colin has a lay of the land but said this four day event won’t be a sprint.
“This is more of a marathon because it’s four full rounds,” said Montgomerie. “There is no need to go attacking early on and make mistakes and try to play catch up.”
Montgomerie is currently 4th in the Schwab Cup Standings and hopes to earn his first ever official U.S. victory.
