84-year-old charged with assault for hitting officer with vehicle

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham police have arrested and charged an 84-year-old Birmingham man with assault Thursday.

Police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards says Tom Pole was driving under the influence when he struck and injured Birmingham Police Department officer Brandon Smith on Saturday, May 10.

Smith suffered a broken leg, a broken right elbow and a dislocated shoulder.

Both the broken leg and broken right elbow required surgery.

Smith is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

Pole is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $60,000 bond. He’s charged with first-degree assault.
