JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is responding to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) request that the U.S. Department of Justice investigate conditions at the Jefferson County Jail.
The SPLC alleges teenage prisoners are subjected to violence, abuse and neglect.
WIAT 42 News reached out to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for a response to the allegations.
They say they have nothing to hide. In fact, they invited the SPLC to interview juveniles held in their jail.
“It’s important to remember that the only juveniles we house in our jail have been charged as adults,” Chief Deputy Randy Christian said in a statement released to WIAT 42 News. “That means we aren’t talking about petty thieves and angels, we are talking about murderers, rapists and armed robbers that have no reason to tell the truth and every reason to mislead the SPLC.”
