BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Family, friends, and fellow officers gathered in Ensley at Greater Antioch Baptist Church to remember Birmingham Police Officer Keary Hollis. Hollis was killed May 10th along Bush Boulevard while off duty.
Officers from the Birmingham area and as far as Montgomery and Florence convened to remember their fallen brother. They stood shoulder to shoulder with black stripes over their badges as Hollis’ family arrived at the church.
“He was very kind and compassionate,” said Johnette Crawford. She lives along Bush Boulevard which is part of the area Officer Hollis patrolled. “I’m just sad today. It’s a great loss. He was very protective of the neighborhood.”
In a program given to all of those in attendance, family members and friends expressed their best memories of Officer Hollis.
Crawford has her own memories of Officer Hollis assisting her.
“There was a time when my granddaughter, she ran away from home,” Crawford said. “We call the police, they came out and did the report. He actually found her and brought here back home safely.”
She also says Hollis will be missed in the community.
“The loss of him is a great loss for the city of Birmingham. It was just a senseless crime. He was a very good gentleman.”
