Electricity prices on the rise due to closure of coal plants

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — If you think your electric bill is high now, it is about to get worse. The government says the price of electricity is about to go up. Dozens of coal burning plants may shut down over the next three years because of tighter regulations and competition from cleaner sources like wind, solar and natural gas.

Coal produces 40% of the nation’s electricity. The energy department predicts power prices will increase 4% this year and an additional 13% by 2020.
