Special technology used to help study & predict hurricanes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Hurricane season begins June 1st. On Thursday we’ll find out what the National Hurricane Center expects for the 2014 season.

One of the tools used to study these systems is the hurricane hunter. The hunter flies into hurricanes to collect information for future forecasts. A team of meteorologists are on board, collecting and interpreting the data.

Also on board is a drop-sonde, which is released from the plane exposing it to the rawest elements of the hurricane. The information it collects gives weather experts a better idea of what’s happening inside the storm.
