Bessemer kidnapping suspect formally charged

BESSEMER, Ala. (WIAT) — The man who tried picking up a child and was later spotted with a woman in his car has been charged in both cases. George Salum, 52, is charged with kidnapping, enticing a child, attempting to elude police and resisting arrest.

He’s being held in the Jefferson County Jail. Police say a 13-year-old girl was walking outside the 4th Avenue Supermarket Wednesday when Salum pulled up in his car and asked the girl if she knew another young lady.

When the girl said she didn’t, he offered her $20 to get in his car. She ran inside and her mother called police.

Investigators believe Salum then abducted a woman somewhere near 9th Avenue. He allegedly convinced the woman to get close enough to the car where he could grab her and force her into the vehicle.

Police caught Salum in Hoover after a chase later that day.
