TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — The Click It or Ticket campaign is underway across Alabama, which means if police catch you not wearing a seat belt, you can expect a hefty fine.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says traffic fatalities are up for the first time in five years.
In 2012, more than 10,000 people who were killed in motor vehicle crashes were not wearing seat belts. Most of those accidents occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. The campaign runs around this time every year, so an increase in law enforcement presence can be expected across the state.
“We receive money, grant money, that basically we can have additional officers just go out and look for this,” said Tuscaloosa police spokesman Sgt. Brent Blankley. “Our officers, they work very hard throughout the day. This allows us to focus efforts on just traffic enforcement.”
Aside from seatbelt violations, officers are also watching out for anyone driving under the influence. The Click It or Ticket campaign runs through June 1.
