BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham firefighters are continuing to investigate the cause of a fire that forced 20 condos to be evacuated Thursday afternoon. Investigators tell WIAT 42 News that the fire started on the roof near an elevator shaft.

The power to the building had to be shut off for safety reasons. Loft owners weren’t the only ones affected by the blaze, though.

Several other officers were hit as well. For The Literary Council, the fire will have a big impact on how they operate.

The organization’s back rooms were close to a total loss. However, they weren’t badly damaged from the fire. Rather, much of the damage was caused by water.

Most of the ceilings are down, along with insulation. Most of the books and teaching materials are beyond saving.

The executive director says the support they’ve been getting since last week has been amazing, but council offices will still be closed all of next week.
