Child drowns during family outing on Smith Lake

JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) — A 7-year-old boy from Arley spending the holiday weekend with family and friends drowned Sunday in Lewis Smith Lake.

Winston County Sheriff Rick Harris tells WIAT 42 News that Joseph Alexander was wading in shallow water with his 5-year-old brother in an area of the lake called the Cable Crossing when he stepped off a hidden bluff and went under.  The water was no more than waist deep at the location.

The child’s father and friends were close by, and pulled the child from the lake. The family tried to call 911 from the location, but could not get a signal out.  They drove to a nearby post office parking lot, where Arley Fire and Rescue members tried unsuccessfully to revive the child.  Alexander had just completed first grade at Curry Elementary School, according to Harris.

The area along Dismal Creek is a popular swimming and camping spot along the lake on weekends, and especially holidays.  Harris says the family had been at the lake all weekend.
