Firefighters checking hydrants may lead to discolored water in some homes

NORTHPORT, Ala. (WIAT) – Residents in Northport and Hueytown may notice something a little different in their water over the next few weeks. For the people of Northport, if the water in your faucet comes out looking a little muddy there’s no need to worry. Firefighters are testing the hydrants this week. Specifically they’re checking the water pressure.

Firefighters in Hueytown are also doing this. They tell WIAT 42 doing the checks stirs up water. When the water gets stirred up, it has a tendency to come out looking “muddy” once it reaches local faucets.

It’s not harmful, but you’ll want to let the water run for a couple minutes before you take a shower or turn on the washer.

The Hueytown Fire Department will be flushing out fire hydrants through the middle of June.
