Trussville man arrested after firing shots during standoff

Scales of justice and jail

TRUSSVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) – A Trussville man is in custody after he barricaded himself in his home Wednesday, then began firing shots when officers tried to get him to surrender.

The incident happened about 6:25 a.m. at a home on Cruise St. in Trussville. A woman in the home called police to say a man she claimed was her husband had assaulted her. By the time police arrived, the woman had fled to a neighbor’s residence. According to Lt. Jeff Bridges with Trussville Police, the woman showed marks that she had been choked.

The man, identified as 49-year-old John Eric Morris, then barricaded himself in the home, refusing to come out. As police negotiated with him, he began firing shots inside the home. After about a 2 ½ hour standoff, Morris surrendered.

Police had been called to the same home on Tuesday after Morris called police. No evidence of an assault was found at that time.

Morris is currently being held on the domestic violence charge, but Bridges says more charges are pending,
