Fatal crash Wednesday on I-59 began as single vehicle accident

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: An update to a deadly accident we brought to you on Wake Up Alabama Wednesday.

Birmingham Police say the accident that killed a man on I-59 began as a one-vehicle accident. When the driver got out to look at his car, another vehicle hit him. A second vehicle hit him soon after.

The victim’s name has not been released.

ORIGINAL: There was a three vehicle accident early Wednesday morning that still has crews on the scene. The accident happened at about 3:30 am on I-59 South, between Roebuck Parkway and 1st Avenue.Traffic delay

One person was killed in the accident. A coroner was on the scene with officials for much of the morning. While crews continue to work the scene that stretch of I-59 South has been closed down, leading to major delays for many making their way into work on Wednesday morning.

The shutdown affects the areas of I-59 South between exits 134 and 132. The roadway remains shut down at this time.

The condition of the other drivers is not known at this time.
