BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Funeral arrangements have been set for Birmingham Fire Chief Ivor Brooks, who passed away Wednesday at Brookwood Medical Center. Viewing for Brooks will be held sat Smith and Gaston Funeral Home, which is located at 102 6th Avenue Southwest.
The viewing will begin at 10 a.m. and family and friends time will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The funeral for Brooks will be held at 16th Street Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Brooks will be buried at Zion Memorial Gardens in Huffman.
Brooks joined the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Department in May of 1982. During his time as chief, Brooks garnered many awards for his leadership and service to the Birmingham community. He was assistant chief until November 2007. Brooks was appointed to the fire chief position by former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford, replacing Carl Harper.
Mayor William Bell says he found out Brooks had a heart attack around 2 p.m. Wednesday, but by the time he got to Brookwood Medical Center, Brooks had passed away.
Brooks leaves behind a wife and four children. Leadership of the fire department will be a team effort for the time being until they find a suitable replacement, says Bell.
