Boy dies after hitting head on railroad tracks

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A 14-year-old boy died Friday afternoon after a tragic accident in Birmingham.

Lt. Scott Thurmond with Birmingham Police tells WIAT 42 News the accident happened after several children were playing near railroad tracks on  the 1700 block of 34th Place North around 12:45 p.m.  As the children were playing, a group of dogs began chasing them. As the they were running from the dogs the boy, who has not been identified, tripped and fell, hitting his head on the railroad tracks.

He was transported to Children’s Hospital and pronounced dead at 1:19 p.m., according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. The accident is under investigation.
