ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) – Authorities in Etowah County are searching for an escaped inmate from the Etowah County Detention Center. They believe he escaped from a gate Saturday morning around 4:30 a.m.The escapee has been identified as 46-year-old Vicente Castaneda who worked in the detention center’s kitchen.
Castaneda recently shaved his head and is not wearing jail clothing. Deputies found his jail uniform after he escaped.
Castaneda was jailed on charges of selling counterfeit items. His last known address is 100 Project Avenue in Collinsville. He is now being charged with escape in the third degree, which is a class C felony.
WIAT 42 News obtained a statement from Castaneda’s attorney Luther Abel.
“Vicente had been in the jail several months on a counterfeit merchandise charge. He also had an immigration hold, so he was likely going to be deported at some point. I’m sure these escape charges don’t help his chances to stay in the country or out of jail. I hope this matter is resolved safely for everyone involved.”
Anyone with information on Vicente Castaneda’s whereabouts should call the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office at 256-546-2825.
