New statewide campaign launched to help prevent more fire-related deaths

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — There have been 61 fire-related deaths in Alabama this year. The Alabama Fire Chiefs Association is launching a new campaign to fight those statistics. “Turn your attention to fire prevention” is a statewide campaign that Alabama fire departments will roll out this month.

At the announcement on Wednesday, fire officials laid out 61 pairs of shoes to represent the people who lost their lives in fires this year.

Chief Alan Martin of Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue says that’s a high number of people, “You see an empty pair of shoes there that represents each one of those [people], then it kind of, it kind of lends more credibility, I guess, to that, or it kind of emphasizes the loss more. There’s no one in those shoes.”

The campaign is intended to promote personal responsibility and awareness of fires and fire prevention.
