VANDIVER, Ala. (WIAT) – A small Shelby County community won’t be completely losing its post office. People in Vandiver were delivered a message Thursday that they didn’t want to hear.
The post office will be opened from 8 a.m. to noon. The thought after the announcement was “at least the Vandiver post office isn’t totally gone.”
The post office isn’t making enough money. One man says it isn’t a problem with the post office. Rather, he says the problem begins with Congress.
“[The post office] doesn’t get any government subsidies anymore, and then they passed a law that the post office has to put aside money every year for future employees’ healthcare, and it amounts to about $5.5 billion a year,” said Bob Truett.
The change will not be immediate. Postal representatives they’ll consider what they heard at the meeting and a final decision will be posted about a month and a half from now.
