BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — After two people were killed in a car accident last week, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) says it will install a barrier between the eastbound and westbound lanes. They say it’s a top priority.
However, friends of a woman killed in the accident say the agency isn’t acting quickly enough.
“They need to fix that. Somebody else might die there,” said Ruth Nation. “And they need to hurry up and fix it. That is not right. That is what caused my friend to die.”
“We decided that the cable rail system like you see out toward Bessemer would be the thing to do here,” said ALDOT third division engineer Brian Davis. “We could do it very quickly. It’s a relatively inexpensive fix.”
Davis says ALDOT is moving as quickly as possible, but adds they are required to go through a bidding process to get the best deal using taxpayer money.
