Downtown Sulligent gutted after lightning sparks fire

SULLIGENT, Ala. (WIAT) – UPDATE: Two buildings are gutted in Sulligent on Front Street.

Several fire departments were called out to the small town in West Alabama late Saturday night and worked to get the fire under control into Sunday morning.

As of 10:00 am the buildings were still smouldering.

WIAT 42 News spoke with Bruce Williams earlier this afternoon. Williams lives several blocks away from Front street but tells us that he heard a bang and then what he describes as something collapsing.

He went outside and saw fire in the sky. At that point he knew lightning had hit downtown.

Williams tells us this isn’t the first time lightning has hit the historic district. But this fire was bigger and more devastating. He shared video he shot of the fire burning with us. You can see it below.

Two buildings caught fire late Saturday night from what is believed to be a lightning strike.
