CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Deputies are investigating two shootings in two locations in Cullman County, where one person was killed and one man is behind bars.
Jay Maynor, 41, is being held at the Cullman County Detention Center.
It all started just after 7:00 last night at the Berlin Plaza Quick Stop on Highway 278.
Sheriff Mike Rainey says a man on a motorcycle shot at a car in the gas station parking lot. A bullet is still lodged in the outer wall of the store.
Witnesses inside the Quick Stop tell us the man being shot at ran inside the store and the shooter followed him. They were shocked Monday, that no one else was hurt.
“He was out to kill somebody, he was out for revenge or he wouldn’t have been out trying to shoot people,” Lamar Weeks said.
Not long after, state troopers were called to a shooting at a home also on Highway 278. That’s where they found 59-year-old Raymond Brooks shot to death. They arrested Maynor.
“There is some ongoing trouble between the victim and the shooter. They are acquainted with each other and the other person at Berlin Quick Stop that he shot at also. They are all acquainted with each other,” Cullman County Chief Deputy Max Bartlett said.
Although sheriff’s deputies have not confirmed a motive, they say the victim was convicted of sexual abuse in the first degree back in 2002 involving an 8-year-old girl.
Charges are expected to be filed against Maynor sometime Monday.
