RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) — The Alabama Department of Health is conducting an investigation in Russellville after three people tested positive for salmonella. Nine additional cases are under investigation. Some residents believe the outbreak originates from the town’s sole restaurant.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates salmonella infects more than a million people each year.
It’s responsible for 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths each year. People who become infected typically develop symptoms within a week of contact.
Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. While some can get by without seeing a doctor and drinking plenty of fluids, people who experience severe symptoms should contact their doctors immediately.
