Good Samaritan killed while trying to help neighbor during robbery

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)– A Good Samaritan trying to help an elderly woman during a robbery was shot and killed Sunday afternoon.

Lt. Sean Edwards with Birmingham Police tells WIAT 42 News that around 5:10 p.m., two men in their early 20’s robbed a home at 1809 3rd Place SW. No one was home initially, but the elderly woman who lived at the home returned to the residence as the robbery was happening.

A neighbor across the street saw the suspects assaulting the woman, and her son came out to confront the third suspect who was outside the home.  Shots were exchanged between the two. The two other suspects came out of the residence they were robbing, and shot the man.

The victim died late Sunday afternoon. His identity has not been released. The woman was not seriously injured.

Those two suspects then stole the woman’s silver 2009 Cadillac CTS.  The third suspect left the scene in a second vehicle.

A “person of interest” is being questioned by police, but investigators are not calling the individual a suspect.
