Becoming a first-time dad on Father’s Day

HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) – There is an old saying that goes “when God closes a door another one opens,” and for one Birmingham couple, that door opened on Father’s Day.

Ronald and Tonika Reid lost their first child after a miscarriage 4 months into the pregnancy; but on June 15th, 2014, they welcomed into the world their second child, a boy. Gavin Anthony Reid had only been on this earth for a few hours, but that was all that it took to steal his father’s heart. Ronald says having the birth of his son on Father’s Day just makes it that much more special, “It’s a father’s greatest gift to have a child on Father’s Day.”

“It’s a father’s greatest gift to have a child on Father’s Day.” – Ronald Reid Jr.

Ronald and Tonika have had an emotionally tough year. The loss of their first child has taught them to take nothing for granted. Tonika says it is important to cherish the time you have, “it makes you take each moment of your pregnancy and of the child’s life…just precious…it’s precious time.”

Ronald plans on spending a lot of time with his Father’s Day present. While Gavin arrived a little later than expected, he was due on the 10th; the couple says it’s the best surprise ever. But surprise or not, Tonika says anytime is a good time to hold your loved ones a little closer, “just love them, cherish on them, adore them, just take each and every day like it’s your last day with them.”

Gavin was the first baby born on Father’s Day this year at Brookwood Medical Center.
