Missing ring in Mountain Brook returned, suspect turns herself in

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. (WIAT) — Last week Mountain Brook police began looking for a person of interest or witness tied to a missing ring from a business. Surveillance footage showed a woman putting the ring in her purse and leaving. Now the woman who stole the ring has turned herself in, and Caroline Simpson Bailey, the owner of the jewelry has had it returned to her.

Originally the incident took place on June 5, sometime between the hours of 9:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Bailey told WIAT 42 News she was waiting in line at the Verizon Wireless store and sat down to wait for her name to be called. She says she took her wedding ring off, put it in her lap and put lotion on her hands. While she was doing so, her name was called. She said she stood up and the ring fell behind the chair.

The surveillance footage released by Mountain Brook Police shows a woman walk over to the chair, put her purse on top of the ring, put the ring into her purse and leave the store.

Bailey, who last week told WIAT 42 that she has been married for 28 years, is happy to have her wedding ring back.
