MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The director of a Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System says a whistleblower complaint about a VA physician cutting and pasting notes in patient files was correct, but records are being reviewed to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
Carolyn Lerner of the U.S. Office of Special Counsel sent a letter to the president Monday about whistleblower complaints at several VA facilities, including Montgomery, Alabama.
Lerner said the VA’s Office of Medical Inspector determined a pulmonologist copied medical records from prior visits to represent current readings for more than 1,200 patients.
Central Alabama VA Director James Talton says the pulmonologist is still with the VA because there was no indication any patient was endangered, but the physician’s records are checked periodically to make sure no copying is occurring.
