BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — We may be only a few weeks into the summer, but kids may already be turning into couch potatoes!
Watching TV, playing video games, and eating unhealthy foods are common for many children this time of year, but experts say it can be dangerously unhealthy.
Dr. Josh Klapow tells us that just because school is out doesn’t mean kids should be sedentary. He says to get your children up and moving this summer there are several tips to follow.
First, have your child pick activities that they would like to do, not what you want to do. Track your child’s progress so they don’t drift back into their old habits. Make exercise a priority to establish a new routine away from the TV. Be a good role model. If you are inactive as a parent, it sends a strong message to your kids that you don’t take fitness seriously either.
Finally, Dr. Klapow says to reward the success. Show your kids that you’ve noticed their improvement.
