Wilsonville manhunt suspect taken into custody

WILSONVILLE, Ala, (WIAT) — UPDATE (X3): Shelby Co. Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Hammack has confirmed with WIAT 42 that the suspect, Steven Earl Owens, has been captured. In an announcement made on the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, Owens was taken into custody on three charges of Attempted Murder. The post goes on to say that Owens was reportedly armed when he was encountered by Alabama Power security officers’ stationed at the Wilsonville Steam Plant. The Alabama Power security officers apprehended and disarmed Owens after he was encountered on the property of the Alabama Power Steam Plant. Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the US Marshal’s Task Force responded to the scene and have taken Owens into custody.

UPDATE (X2): The Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies, with the assistance of the Alabama Department of Corrections canine search teams, have turned over search efforts to the United States Marshal’s Task Force. Law enforcement will remain in the area to assist the Marshal’s Task Force as the need arises.

UPDATE: Parrish Alleman spoke with Sgt. Clay Hammac of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Hammack shares the latest on the situation. Also all major roadways in the Wilsonville area have been cleared and are now open.  Deputies are maintaining a perimeter in the area, and the search is still active.

ORIGINAL: Shelby County deputies are searching for a man they say is armed and dangerous in Wilsonville this morning. They are asking people who live Wilsonville to stay inside while they search.

On Sunday, June 22, 2014 at about 10:45 p.m., deputies responded to a Wilsonville home on a domestic disturbance call. When they got there, they tried to pull over a car they believed was involved. The driver of that car led them on a chase. During the chase, the driver damaged one patrol unit and then fired a handgun at the patrol cars behind him.

At around 12:30 Monday morning, deputies put out a tire deflation device and stopped the car. The driver got out and ran away near Highway 25 and Avery Road.

Steven Earl OwensDeputies are in the area right now searching for the man they say is armed and dangerous. Wilsonville residents should be on the look out for lots of deputies and police in the area of Highway 25 at Co Rd 61, Mallory Road, and Avery Drive.

The man they are looking for is identified as 24-year-old Steven Earl Owens from Wilsonville. He’s about 5’10, 150 lbs, with brown hair, green eyes, and a goatee. He was last seen wearing a maroon shirt and blue jeans.

Steven Earl Ownes is considered armed and dangerous. People in the Wilsonville area are encouraged to stay inside and report any suspicious activity in the area.
