BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Each year billions of dollars are stolen by criminals using sophisticated online scams. One of the more often used scams leads banking customers into revealing their personal information. Security alerts are being sent out by Bank of America and Chase that look like legitimate alerts. They, however, are coming from a con artist.
The alerts being sent out provide a link to Chase.com and Bank of America, but the links send the used to a fake website set up by scammers who have worked to craft it to appear like the actual websites of both companies. The fake site asks for personal information that includes a social security number.
Steve Weisman of Scamicide.com says, “If you get an email with a link, you never click on the link, no matter how legitimate it looks until you have actually contacted that company.”
The banks say when you contact them you should use the phone number on the back of your credit or ATM card. You should never use a number sent in a suspicious text or email.
