Counterfeit cash a growing problem in Northport

NORTHPORT, Ala. (WIAT) — Counterfeit cash is a growing problem for Northport Police. They say it’s being used everywhere. But they have made an arrest tied to the influx of fake dough.

Shannon Rittenhouse has been charged with 12 counts of first-degree possession of a forged instrument. Police don’t think Rittenhouse is the only person tied to the counterfeit cash though, and it is possible the other suspects may even be working together says Lt. Keith Carpenter of the Northport PD, “We believe some of them are, because of some of the serial numbers match up on the currency, but we’ve been unable to determine who’s actually creating the currency, so far.”

Northport Police are seeing fake currency ranging from $20’s up to $100 dollar bills. If you know anything about this case that could help investigators, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 752-7867.
