14-year-old arrested in connection with shooting death of DeKalb County woman


MOUNT VERNON, Ala. (WIAT) – A 14-year-old was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 38-year-old DeKalb County woman Tuesday afternoon, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.. DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris says the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon on County Road 99 at 1:05 p.m. Kelena Annette Hicks, was found in the living room of her mobile home suffering from a gunshot wound.

She was taken to Huntsville Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m. Her body was delivered to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science lab in Huntsville.

Harris says the 14-year-old was taken to a detention facility in Anniston.

“This is one of the most disturbing cases I have had to deal with in my career. You just can’t imagine a 14-year-old doing something this brutal,” Harris said. “This will be a case for the courts to decide on the status of this young man. He will remain in juvenile custody until that decision is made.

“I am very sorry for the family and their loss in this case. This young woman had just lost her father last month and this family is devastated. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. We will withhold any further comment on this case at this time due to the sensitive nature of the circumstances.”
