BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)– Several apartments are unlivable after a fire tore through the second floor Wednesday night.
It happened at the Redmont Apartments on 21st Way near the southside of Birmingham.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire and what the extent of the damage is but several apartments were affected.
A lot of people who live in the apartments can’t stay there right now. We spoke with one woman who says her apartment suffered water damage. She says she had to run out of her home to escape the burning building.
“I’m just thankful the Lord was watching over me tonight. I’m still just in shock. It’s unreal,” Anita Bailey said.
Anita Bailey and other people we spoke with told us they heard an explosion before the fire started. The call to 911 actually came in as an explosion, but fire fighters tell us there was no evidence of an explosion at the scene.
One man who lives in the apartments was hurt and taken to the hospital. The battalion chief on scene told us he believes the man suffered minor injuries.
They will continue to investigate what started the fire.
