BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A Huffman High School teacher was arrested and charged with having sexual contact with a student under 19, according to the Birmingham Police Department.
Phillip Smith III was arrested and charged with being school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19 and was taken to the Jefferson County Jail on $60,000 bond.
Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards says the incident occurred in December of 2013 at Huffman High School. It was initially brought to the department’s attention in January.
Edwards says detectives conducted an investigation and presented their findings to the district attorney’s office, who deemed the evidence was enough to serve an indictment against Smith.
Edwards says Smith posted bail.
