MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — A historical building in downtown Montgomery is the subject of investigation following its collapse Wednesday. Several streets in the surrounding area were closed after the historic Webber Department Store building collapsed.
The building was built as a theater in 1860 before it was repurposed into a department store. It hosted performances by John Wilkes Booth, an actor not known for any of his roles though, but rather his assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
The Weber Building was also the scene of an early Civil Rights Movement protest.
